Leo Potts, Master Clinician

Join us on August 14th for the "Lindeman/Sobel Approach to Artistic Wind Performance" master class presented by Leo Potts, Master Clinician and Professor of Music Emeritus at California State University, Long Beach.

Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments and to have a melodic piece prepared to play.

Clock hours available for WMEA music educators.  10am to 1pm Saturday, August 14th

Ealry registration is $20.00.  Call (509) 326-9516 and register now!  Admission is $25.00 at the door.

The following are some of the questions and concepts that will be discussed:

  1. Do we appreciate the relationship between our fingers and our air stream?
  2. Are you aware that every note or position on your instrument has a different resistance point?
  3. How does the string player's bow relate to the wind player's air stream?
  4. Are we taking the music off the page and putting it under the fingers on the instrument?
  5. How can we analyze a musical phrase to make it work better both technically and artistically?
  6. As wind players are we aware of how incorrect rhythms affect tone quality and the integrity of the musical phrase?

"I have had the pleasure of watching Leo Potts work with my students for five years. It was obvious from the start that Leo was a master teacher of woodwinds. What took me a little longer to realize, is that Leo Potts teaches much more than saxophone or clarinet techniques. To put it most simply, he teaches music. I have seen and heard players at all levels and on all instruments, immediately respond to his teaching. With a few short sentences, Leo brings to life the musical line sleeping within the written page, and more importantly, within the student. His teaching makes an immediate impact on the tone, the rhythmic integrity and the emotional content of the music. I strongly encourage any musician, on any instrument who has the chance to work with Professor Potts, to jump in! You'll be glad you did."

"I've been studying with Leo Potts for the past year. Some of you may be wondering what a trombonist could learn from a sax player, and that's understandable. What does a sax player know about slide positions? About as much as I know about sax fingerings. Personally I believe that if it wasn't for Leo Potts (and by extension Phil Sobel and Henry Lindeman) I probably wouldn't have had the recent success I've been having at auditions. Leo Potts has fundamentally changed the way I hear. Everything sounds wrong to me and that's a wonderful feeling. What he's done for me is give me a new way of looking at the art form. Phrases that would've been perfect to my ear a year ago now need a lot of work. I've studied with some of the best trombone players on the planet and the concepts that Leo has to offer are very different from anything I've encountered before. I am very grateful for the chance to have worked with such a fine musician and person and I highly encourage you to look into what he has to offer."

" I am a firm believer in the benefits the Lindeman/Sobel Approach to Wind Performance will provide to musicians. I have seen Leo Potts work with musicians, and not only wind players but all musicians, and I have witnessed immediate results. The methods Leo uses directly effect the musicianship we all possess but have not tapped into as yet. He has applied the Lideman/Sobel techniques to full bands, wind players and strings. Leo is a remarkable saxophonist but it is important to note that this session will benefit ALL musicians. It's not so much about technique as it is about your understanding of how you can reach your full potential as a musician. It is inspiring to watch Leo work with musicians (of all ages) and have such a profound effect on their music. If you are serious about reaching a new plateau, you must attend this seminar."

" I can't imagine a more effective way of improving upon an established technique or developing new methods of successful playing than working with Leo Potts. His ideas about line and approach to phrasing and musicality have helped musicians to improve their skill and artistry. His concepts are applicable to any instrument and open the pathway to creativity and espressivity. He has found a way to explain and demonstrate what it means to be musical. Any one who has the good fortune to work with him will surely come away a more sensitive and feelingful musician."
