Patrick Medina
In the summer of 1998, Patrick Medina came to Holy Names Music Center in hopes of pursuing his interest in music. Within a matter of a few weeks with instructor Tom Kelly, Patrick’s fascination with the alto saxophone and improvised music flourished. Tom Kelly set him up with lessons with the great saxophonist, Hadley Caliman, in Seattle, WA. Patrick continued to practice throughout high school and with the assistance of all the great educators at Holy Names, Patrick was awarded a BEST scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, considered by many to be the best school of jazz and contemporary music in the world. At Berklee, Patrick’s musical journey continued as he studied and performed with the likes of George Garzone, Joe Lovano, Bill Pierce, Shannon LeClaire, Dave Santoro, Ed Tomassi, Lin Biviano, and Hal Crook. During his fourth semester at Berklee Patrick was awarded the Charlie Parker Scholarship, the school's highest award for a saxophonist. The following year Patrick was awarded one of five Woodwind Department Achievement Scholarships and a Berklee Achievement Scholarship from the Office of Scholarships at Berklee. Patrick is going into his final year at Berklee and plans to move to the New York City area to perform and continue onto his graduate studies. “There are two basic truths in my life. One, life can be the most complicated thing ever! Two, music restores clarity and a natural balance in my life through which happiness is possible. Without Holy Names Music Center I may never have found this. At Holy Names, I was able to, without the restrictions I found in the public schools and my private studies, explore the music within me. I would like to thank wholeheartedly the people of Holy Names Music Center for this and for introducing me to some of the most important people in my life. Of all the teachers I’ve studied with, I believe Holy Names Music Center has some of the finest mentors out there.” -Patrick Medina <> |
